Om Prosjektbanken

Beyond classical devices, functional material, such as ferroic materials, hold great promise for future nanoelectronic device concepts, enabling faster, smarter and more energy efficient computation. This new generation of materials develops in the direction of increased system complexity, and often involves complex 3D structures at the nanoscale with atomically sharp interfaces. The progress is catalyzed by the ability to resolve their properties at the relevant length scales, an increasingly difficult task.  As an MSCA fellow, Dr. Kasper Hunnestad will integrate migration, an existing computational method in geophysics, to conductive atomic force miscopy (cAFM). cAFM is typically limited to surface conductance measurements, whereas migration is a powerful technique employed for converting surface acquisitions of seismic data to subsurface 3D images. With Dr. Hunnestad’s background in both material science and geophysics, he can effectively develop this multidisciplinary method and exploit it to reveal 3D transport properties of exotic topological states in functional oxides.  To begin the research, a two-year research stay at the University of Canterbury will enable two primary objectives: i)	Develop the computational method migration for cAFM purposes ii)	Perform experiments on materials hosting exotic topological states with technological potential.  In the return phase at the University of Oslo, the technique will be benchmarked against established electrical characterization techniques, leading to the final objective: iii)	Correlate quantitative electrical measurements to the cAFM data  The research will pave the way for future investigations of 3D systems, largely expanding other researchers capabilities to understand their materials. Furthermore, it will strengthen Dr. Hunnestad’s network and competence, bringing him in contact with experts in the relevant scientific disciplines: ferroic materials, computational methods and electrical characterization.

3D Imaging of Conductance Networks at the Nanoscale

WOOD and STOne Conservation by innovative multifunctional nanocomposites based on sustainable matrices

Cultural heritage (CH) is highly valued by 84% of European citizens as it reflects both national and European identities, contributing significantly to the economy through tourism, cultural and preservation activities. However, stone and wood objects of CH value can suffer from severe deterioration, mostly decohesion and biodeterioration, which are predicted to be worsened by climate change. Currently, available methods often fail to meet the requirements that conservation treatments must fulfil. To address this, WOODSTOC will develop novel nanocomposites that, for the first time, simultaneously strengthen both stone and wood objects while offering antimicrobial protection in a manner that is both compatible with the materials and highly durable. This will be achieved by combining three types of nanoparticles (ZnO, Ag2O, carbon quantum dots), having different colours and antimicrobial abilities, with two types of matrices (hydroxyapatite formed in situ for stone, hydroxypropyl cellulose for wood) which are more sustainable compared to existing alternatives. The project outcomes will enable a more efficient and sustainable preservation of our cultural heritage, thus significantly contributing to UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11.4 (“Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage”). The development of new composites in Europe, as opposed to competing countries where research is ongoing, will also increase European competitiveness. Most importantly, WOODSTOC will give the Postdoctoral Researcher the opportunity to deepen and diversify her scientific knowledge and technical competence, thanks to the research and training provided by the two host institutions (one university and one museum, having complementary fields of expertise, mind-sets and facilities), thus achieving the PR’s career development goal to fortify her independence as a researcher.

IndiBrain is a doctorate network designed to provide training in computational neuroscience research, leading to doctoral degrees for 15 doctoral candidates (DCs). The project aims to transform new and existing partnerships of 12 universities into enduring collaborations. Along with contributions from 11 industrial and training partners, our consortium creates the foundation for an European network of highly skilled, resilient, entrepreneurial, and creative neuroscientists.  To ensure an innovative training environment for its DCs, the consortium bundles unique European expertise in neuroscience, cutting-edge neuroimaging, along with neurotechnology and computational modeling.   Building on experience gained in earlier DNs, IndiBrain’s scientific goal is to advance understanding of individual differences in neuroplasticity and brain dynamics  in health and disease using technologies like ultra-high-resolution MRI.  The DCs will develop and apply innovative tools for studying the brain, focussing on individual-level biological interpretability, and using vision as a model system. Our training network is a critical step in advancing our understanding of the brain with translation applications in mind for improving diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation, ultimately resulting in a better quality of life for individuals with ocular and neurological conditions, as well as healthcare effectiveness and sustainability in the EU and beyond.  The network will equip DCs with transferable skills in science communication, collaboration, business development, grant writing, and responsible AI use, improving their career opportunities in research, industry, and as entrepreneurs. They will inspire each other to excel in fundamental and translational research, both during and long after the funding period. Anticipating continued demand for the expertise of our DCs, we envision IndiBrain as a model for future-oriented European doctoral training in computational neuroscience. 

Characterizing Individual Differences in Brain Plasticity and Dynamics to help ensure Effective and Sustainable Health Care

UNVEIL aims to transform the diagnostics and preservation of cultural heritage by developing and applying innovative NonDestructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques and advanced digital tools for diagnostics, conservation, and public engagement. The project addresses key challenges in cultural heritage preservation by focusing on two main objectives: a) enhancing surface and subsurface analysis of multilayered and 3D artworks through advanced NDE techniques, such as terahertz imaging, thermography, and ultrasonics; and b) integrating and visualising multimodal NDE data using data fusion, augmented reality, and digital twins to provide a holistic understanding of artworks’ condition and structure.  To achieve these goals, UNVEIL brings together 21 partners from academia, industry, and cultural institutions in a highly interdisciplinary consortium. Research will be carried out by 12 Doctoral Candidates within a structured training programme combining cutting-edge research, hands-on experience, and cross-sectoral collaboration. Specific innovations include super-resolution terahertz imaging and advanced ultrasonic and thermographic methods tailored for cultural heritage. The development of digital twins and augmented-reality tools will enhance collaboration among conservation professionals and engage the public through interactive exhibits.  UNVEIL aligns with the Horizon Europe Work Programme by addressing cultural heritage preservation challenges and promoting digital transformation in the cultural sector. It contributes to European innovation by fostering collaboration between engineering and humanities, advancing NDE methods, and training a new generation of researchers equipped to bridge these fields. By improving conservation practices, enriching public accessibility, and supporting sustainable cultural heritage management, UNVEIL has significant scientific, societal, and economic relevance.

Unified Nondestructive Evaluation of Historical Artifacts

Doctoral Network for reSilience exPeRts IN future larGe-scale critical infrastructures

The project aims to develop an innovative research and training programme to prepare next generation experts in critical entities resilience design. Fifteen doctoral candidates will collectively engage in an ambitious interdisciplinary research project focusing on aspects related to the resilience design, real-time monitoring and control, anomaly detection and isolation, and incident response, in geographically distributed systems of cyber-physical systems. The PhD topics will investigate open research questions about the use of systems and control theory, formal methods, explainable AI, data-driven approaches, and human-centered design to build safe and resilient societal-scale critical entities. The project will also promote industrial excellence by offering opportunities to the researchers for testing their tools and frameworks in real-world scenarios, provided by the industrial partners. In this line, industrial partners will provide scenarios focusing on water, energy and transportation services, inspired by a real deployment using state-of-the-art and innovative IoT components. The research outcomes that will be validated in the context of these use cases will be reusable with other critical entities in other sectors.

Recent advancements in AI, specifically Generative AI (GenAI), have started to significantly impact how teaching and learning occur and how the respective institutions operate. GenAI will have to function in learning spaces and contexts alongside other activities. Therefore, it is expected that instruction and GenAI will complement each other and stand by each other. Yet, there is a limited understanding of how teachers/learners and AI interact, understand, respect, and learn from each other. The purpose of LEARNGENAI is to examine how GenAI is used and under which circumstances it has the potential to improve teaching and learning. The aim is to identify the critical success factors in a range of contexts, and use these findings to promote research and practice. Following an interdisciplinary approach that bridges the domains of computer science, pedagogy and educational sciences, teacher education, learning analytics, and learning theory, along with recent advances in technological tools and AI-based methods, the present project will explore how GenAI is effectively leveraged in education and attempt to isolate key success factors. Therefore, the main focus of the project will be to identify various strategies for implementing GenAI in learning and the success factors to support hybrid learning, understand how information sources, technological infrastructure and human skills and knowledge are ethically coalesced to achieve desired ends, and develop GenAI prototype applications and assess their impact in learning. By empirically investigating these issues and developing a framework of best practices, the ultimate goal is to guide educational institutions in their transition into the artificial intelligence era and enable them to enhance student experiences through personalized learning opportunities.

Learning analytics and Generative AI to design and facilitate learning

The objective of MetaExplore is to provide research training for young researchers in novel experimental as well as computational methods to fully exploit the immense biotechnological potential of metagenomic sequence space, with innovative approaches on both fronts. On the experimental side, successful screening of large metagenomic libraries requires ultrahigh-throughput technologies, because low hit rates can frustrate conventional experimental formats. Here microfluidic droplet screening (allowing >10e8 picolitre assays per day, at kHz rates) is used in various formats to derive fundamental insight and achieve valorisation, along with label-free mass-spectrometric screens and liquid handling robots. On the in silico side, unprecedented availability of sequence data (e.g. more than 3 billion ORFs in the database MGnify) and machine learning will provide systematic insights based in sequence interpretation. The combination of sequence-based and functional metagenomics is extraordinarily powerful and our training programme bridges the classical divide between them. These skill sets, together with environmental DNA resources (from polar regions, hot environments, soil, marine & fresh-water and gut libraries) support campaigns to identify useful protein reagents, for green technology applications (e. g. for microplastics degradation, glycobiology or fine chemical synthesis), and healthcare (e.g. as bacteriocidal reagents or therapeutic enzymes). 11 leading academic groups and 2 industrial partners will work together in MetaExplore (and 9 companies and universities as associated partners and advisors). The unified efforts of leading stakeholders in the field of metagenomics from Europe will provide a uniquely powerful multidisciplinary training environment with critical mass to facilitate the uptake of new technologies into applied research, exposing young researchers to typical intersectorial challenges in the exploration and sustainable exploitation of biodiversity.

Ultrahigh-throughput exploration of metagenomic sequence space to discover and engineer novel biocatalysts and bioactive compounds

QARC is a targeted proposal that aims at the practical deployment of post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) technologies into real-world applications and infrastructures. It is focused on implementing PQC to open-source software and on specific platforms, such as embedded constrained devices and hardware platforms, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). For these platforms, where secure implementations of PQC algorithms are still lacking, the consortium will develop novel prototypes and evaluate them in realistic pilots designed in collaboration with National Cyber Security Authorities (NCSAs). The focus will be devoted to 1) the design and implementation of hybrid schemes guaranteeing security even if legacy or some PQC families fail, 2) cryptographic agility providing easy cryptographic updates, and 3) implementation security and resistance to side-channel attacks. Using secure implementations, pilots on eGovernment, Cloud infrastructures, NCSAs’ services, and open-source software will be run across the EU to obtain exemplary deployment strategies and create good practices for the transition from legacy to PQC cryptography.   A major component of QARC is the strong involvement of National Cyber Security Authorities as consortium partners. This will ensure coordinated transition strategies and aligned national roadmaps. The project includes activities for building the NCSA network, creating policy briefs, conducting comparative studies of multiple roadmap implementations in different countries, identifying lessons learned, and facilitating scientific, commercial, and community support in these transitions. A particular focus is given to small-to-medium countries with agencies with limited resources.  In addition to technical tasks, the QARC project also includes activities focused on standardization and legislation updates and the training and awareness-raising activities that are necessary components of successful PQC transition.

Quantum-Resistant Cryptography in Practice

Corneal disease ranks as the fourth major cause of blindness, imposing a significant medical, social, and economic burden. Effective therapeutic options for corneal disease are unfortunately limited. The development of regenerative treatment has proven more complex than anticipated. Bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements and their clinical applications in ocular regenerative medicine requires equipping the next generation of (medical) researchers with comprehensive training to drive innovation and facilitate clinical translation. STEM-CORE aims to reshape European doctorate education, through ‘training through innovative research’, nurturing future leaders in ocular regenerative medicine and beyond. This training program offers doctoral candidates (DCs) a comprehensive training trajectory to develop a robust, affordable, and sustainable cell therapy for treating corneal blindness caused by stem cell deficiency. Key components include in-depth understanding of stem cell differentiation, developing (genetically corrected) cell products and biomaterials, and evaluating regenerative function of the cell products in corneas. Through innovative, interdisciplinary and intersectoral research, STEM-CORE provides training of a full set of transferable and other complementary skills to DCs that enhances their career prospects across academia and industry. To achieve this, STEM-CORE has assembled a team of leading European researchers and dedicated supervisors from academic and non-academic sectors, whose expertise spans all facets of the training program. We envision that STEM-CORE will not only establish a novel paradigm for cell therapy development but also empower aspiring researchers to tackle broad challenges in future regenerative medicine, advancing European innovation and contributing to societal progress.

Stem Cell Therapy Development for Corneal Epithelium Regeneration

Geospatial data are nowadays collected with various sensors (hyperspectral cameras, LiDAR, etc.) and platforms (airplanes, drones, ground robots) and processed with advanced methods (e.g. photogrammetry, artificial intelligence - AI, etc.) in order to deliver analyses- and decision-ready thematic products. These products can be used, among others, for environmental monitoring, sustainable use of space, spatial analyses, simulation and predictions. The I-DEAL project aims to foster new skills and strengthen human resources performing a series of secondments to develop new, unconventional approaches for geospatial data acquisition, processing, verification and usage to support the European Green Deal actions. New methods based on AI, robotics, oblique aerial cameras, LiDAR and hyperspectral sensors, and combining ground, airborne and satellite data for the monitoring of various ecosystems (atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and built environment) will be investigated, tested and applied in various scenarios. Investigations will tackle different Green Deal ambitions, sharing and exchanging complementary expertise to boost geospatial technologies and improve Earth monitoring and climate change mitigation. Scientific events and transversal training activities will also be organized and offered to support career developments. The integration of I-DEAL intersectoral aspects will allow researchers to see, understand and exploit private company approaches or mapping agency methodologies; at the same time, non-academic people and service providers will exchange with and benefit from R&D activities and in-house products. The I-DEAL consortium consists of 14 partners from 11 countries, with practitioners and commercial representatives, as well as scientists with diverse educational backgrounds, such as technical, engineering, natural and socio-economic. The project will run for 48 months with a total number of 186 months of secondments.
