Using seed functional traits to understand and predict alpine plant responses to global climate change

To improve predictions of how plants may persist or disappear from ecosystems, we urgently need improved understanding of how climate change affects a critical and vulnerable plant life-history stage and transition–seeds and seed recruitment. Seed ecology is a growing discipline, yet it lacks some of the recent standardised methods and centralised resources of other plant sciences, such as the core databases and methodological handbooks that have spurred plant functional trait innovation since the early 2000s.  Alpine areas can provide a glimpse of our future under climate change because they are warming faster than global averages and because alpine ecosystems are temperature-limited and hence more vulnerable to warming. Long-term warming experiments demonstrate that this vulnerability can alter vegetation structure, which in turn may change vegetation function, particularly carbon cycling. To predict which plants will persist, we need better data and frameworks for understanding how seeds and seed recruitment in the alpine respond to warmer climates.  I will (1) publish a standardised handbook of core seed trait measurements, (2) collect new trait data from seed collections and harmonise existing datasets to form a publicly accessible alpine seed trait database, (3) establish a functional trait-based framework of seed ecology, and (4) experimentally test how seeds respond to warming as a demonstration of how these new resources can rapidly expand our understanding of climate change effects on seed ecology.

Proglacial lake impacts on the export of Organic carbon and Nutrients to Downstream ecosystems

Glacier retreat is accelerating in response to climate warming, leading to an increase in the number and total area of proglacial lakes globally. Proglacial lakes have the potential to modulate glacial runoff via sediment immobilization and in-lake biogeochemical cycling, with implications for the productivity and biodiversity of valuable downstream ecosystems. However, a quantitative understanding of the impact of proglacial lake modulation on the export of glacier-derived suspended sediment (SS), nutrients and organic carbon (OC) is currently lacking. POND will fill this critical knowledge gap by quantifying relationships between proglacial lake physical characteristics and changes in riverine fluxes of SS, nutrients and OC in rapidly deglaciating landscapes in Norway using a combination of remote sensing, field sampling, and biogeochemical analyses. Results will be used to inform a novel and globally relevant conceptual model of proglacial lakes as 'biogeochemical modulators' of glacial runoff. POND will be hosted at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, facilitating unrivaled low-carbon impact access to Arctic and temperate glacial field sites. This highly interdisciplinary project unites my track record in glacial dissolved organic matter chemistry with UiT's expertise in glacier biogeochemical cycling and landscape evolution at regional to global sales. A secondment at the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate will facilitate access to glacier and glacial lake inventories, supporting my training in the use of remote sensing and ensuring close collaboration with a water resource management stakeholder with direct interest in POND research findings. POND's unprecedented quantitative evaluation and conceptual model of the biogeochemical impacts of proglacial lake growth on SS, nutrient and OC export to downstream ecosystems will inform future ecosystem management and policy in glacially-influenced mountain regions worldwide. 

Physics-Informed Surrogate Modeling for Offshore Helical Pile Design Optimization

The development of offshore wind turbine (OWT) foundations toward larger sizes and deeper embedment presents challenges for traditional foundations, which have long installation times and cause significant environmental disturbances. Helical piles, with their distinct installation method, offer shorter installation times and reduced environmental impact, making them a strong candidate for OWT foundations. However, the lack of efficient methods to assess offshore HP load-bearing performance under various conditions limits their broader application. This project aims to develop an open-source decision-making tool to optimize offshore HP design using data-driven techniques. By incorporating physics-informed machine learning algorithms (PIA), the tool will enable surrogate modeling to replace traditional numerical analyses, allowing accurate predictions of HP’s static and dynamic performance, including installation effects. This will improve design processes, reduce costs, and contribute to sustainable offshore engineering practices. The fellowship has three key Research and Innovation Objectives (R&IO): (1) to establish a validated numerical model that simulates HP load-bearing performance, including installation effects, which will form a database for (2) developing PIA-based data-driven models to assess HP capacity. These models will then be integrated into (3) an open-source decision-making tool using reliability-based foundation design approach (RBFDA) to optimize HP design under various conditions. The fellowship will be conducted at NGI, Norway, with a secondment at OsloMet, Norway. The skills gained will enable the researcher to become an expert in HP technology and support the pursuit of a tenure-track position. Furthermore, the project aligns with the European Green Deal and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by contributing to clean energy and sustainable engineering.

Supercritical geothermal energy is a new frontier in the pursuit of renewable, carbon-free energy. However, the extreme pressure and temperature conditions where supercritical reservoirs are found in Earth's crust coincide with the transition zone where rocks shift from brittle to ductile behaviour. Historically, this transition was believed to be a cut-off for fluid circulation, but recent findings have challenged this view, highlighting the urgent need to understand the mechanical and hydrological behaviours of rocks within this rheological domain. PERCOLATE proposes to investigate the mechanics of rock deformation and fluid flow at this brittle-ductile transition by integrating advanced rock deformation techniques, X-ray 4D imaging, machine learning-based image analysis and fluid flow modelling This project leverages my extensive experimental experience and enriches my expertise with valuable new skills in imaging and machine learning. Ultimately, PERCOLATE will contribute to the EU New Green Deal’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by advancing our comprehension of geothermal energy and deformation in the crust.

Peering at the micromechanics of the brittle-ductile transition and its effects on fluid flow

CLIMES advances the understanding of multisectoral impacts of climate extremes in an era of global change, and trains a cohort of climate impacts experts to enhance European resilience to future climate impacts and further Europe's capacity for research and innovation in this field. CLIMES specifically focuses on improved climate impact data compilation, innovative risk assessment and the development of climate impact forecasting.   The research and training in CLIMES respond to urgent socio-economic needs. The cost of climate-related disasters is steadily increasing, as many climate extremes become more frequent and severe due to anthropogenic climate change. The European Commission recognises changes in climate extremes and their impacts as transnational problems and key challenges facing the Union. These challenges are also an opportunity: there is huge untapped potential for climate services in Europe, notably in relation to climate impacts. This potential can be realised through the training of a new generation of experts on the topic.  CLIMES achieves excellence in research through an interdisciplinary approach bridging academia, the private, public and third sectors, fostering cross-pollination between research fields as diverse as climate science, urban sociology, electrical engineering, data science and epidemiology. This effort is timely, and leverages newly-developed climate datasets and Artificial Intelligence tools to open unexplored avenues in the study of impacts of climate extremes.   Excellence in training leverages the breadth and depth of the CLIMES consortium, enabling CLIMES doctoral candidates to become climate impacts experts. The doctoral candidates will combine a thorough scientific understanding of impacts of climate extremes with a practical knowledge of user-relevant information, climate policy and climate service commercialisation. This prepares them for a broad range of careers, across academia, the private, public and third sectors. 

Understanding and Predicting Impacts of Climate Extremes under Global Change

Thunderstorms emit radiation across a spectrum from visible light to gamma rays, including terrestrial gamma-ray flashes and produce flickering gamma-ray flashes, thunderstorm ground enhancements and long-lasting gamma-ray glows which are the most energetic natural processes on Earth, with energies beyond those of radioactive decay chains as they appear in nuclear power plants. Sporadically observed since the ‘80s by aircraft and balloon platforms, by satellites, and on ground, these phenomena have been considered exotic and rare for decades. However, recent measurements have shown that high-energy emission is indeed common, pervasive and extended over huge areas, and that the phenomena are much more complex and inter-related than previously thought, posing new challenges. Despite their common nature, we are lacking fundamental knowledge about their generation and about their effects on humans, technology and the environment. The goal of the proposed Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network is to gain a deeper understanding of high-energy emissions from thunderclouds, their relation to lightning and their effects. The consortium is built such that these phenomena are addressed through observations, numerical modelling and experiments. Additionally, we will develop new detectors suitable for future missions detecting such radiation in-situ or from space by building a consortium of international partners both academically and from industry. Hence, the GRAIL project combines innovative research and technological aspects providing a training environment for doctoral candidates in gas discharge physics, atmospheric electricity, modelling, data analysis and technological development. GRAIL has thus been designed to train the next generation of researchers and prepare them to be lead scientists in academia focusing on atmospheric electricity,  and – through the incorporation of industrial partners – in industry interested in thunderstorms and lightning.

HEALth and ENvironment in Africa and Europe

HEALENAE offers a cross-continental, innovative, interdisciplinary, and multi-sectoral anthropological approach to pressing interrelated health and environmental challenges across Africa and Europe. Concerns about interlinkages between environment and health and the inter-continental connectedness between these problems have intensified since the last pandemic. These include: rising temperatures; proliferation of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases; changes in nutrition; increase in chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; chemical intensification of agriculture; and pollution, including extraction of minerals that poison local African environments while providing batteries for global “green” markets. Addressing the complex intersection of health and social consequences of globalised production and environmental change requires new kinds of social scientists, versed in environmental and health issues, able to think and work across sectors and continents. HEALENAE brings together anthropological, one health, environmental, global and regional approaches to address these problems. Seven universities—Aarhus (DK), Cape Town (SA), Edinburgh (UK), Leuven (B) Makerere (UG), Nairobi (KE), and Oslo (NO)—will offer 15 double or joint degrees for ESRs, all of them between African and European universities. Through ethnographic fieldwork, exploring specific connections between health and environment across both continents, the programme will provide insights into, and enable future mitigations of, challenges such as changing disease patterns, climate and environmental changes, shifting population demographics, accelerated urbanisation, growing inequality, emerging epidemics, changing gender and generational dynamics. The ESRs will be trained in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches, engaging with civil society organisations and using multimodal and interactive outlets to maximize the dissemination and impact of their findings.

The need for effective, cost-efficient conservation practices is greater than ever as we are now facing catastrophic loss of Earth’s biodiversity. Current conservation practices, from sample collection to inspection and monitoring, are typically very labour intensive, costly and time-consuming. Collected data are often inaccurate, incomplete or subject to human bias. However, recent advances in robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies have shown a great potential for offering practical tools for conservationists.  Therefore, the aim of WildBotics is to boost ecosystem conservation practices through innovation in robotics, sensors and AI solutions. Autonomous terrestrial, aquatic, and aerial robots will be used as a unifying platform to elevate the ongoing digital revolution of nature conservation practices and integrate leading-edge conservation ecology and computer science.  WildBotics will develop new autonomous long-endurance systems, improve current sensor and software capabilities and combine these advances to create practical solutions for large-scale automated monitoring or collection of samples, thus supporting cutting-edge conservation research. WildBotics will expand current computer vision capabilities in ecology, create practical solutions for monitoring wildlife populations and ecosystems, and offer effective and automated means of gathering and interpreting samples.  These challenges will be solved by 12 PhD candidates hosted in 12 recognized and interdisciplinary organizations. A multifaceted research training programme has been designed to educate a new generation of PhDs and provide them with a unique skill set enabling them to tackle the great challenges we face to mitigate the decline of global biodiversity. WildBotics will raise the level of excellence in doctoral programs and simultaneously enhance the career perspectives of the PhDs in both academia and industry.

Autonomous Sampling with Robotics in the Wild for Nature Conservation

Modern devices require energy transition technologies to power them. These include electric vehicles, photovoltaic panels, and high-speed microprocessors. However, our insatiable demand for speed and power means that energy storage devices are becoming larger with higher capacity. Such unregulated scale-up of devices, comes with increased risks of over-heating and fires. Therefore, ensuring system longevities requires further understanding of the effect of scale-up on heat dissipated. This will help us design systems to remove this heat, which enables longevities improving energy utilisation and minimising waste. Liquid-gas or solid-liquid phase-change thermal management offers an alternative to single-phase cooling/heating. This work builds on our previous RISE project (EC-H2020-RISE-ThermaSMART-778104) that upskilled over 50 students to obtain doctoral and masters degrees, and led to over 75 publications. ThermEnTrans will focus on understanding and developing the necessary multiscale frameworks to scale-up phase-change thermal management systems enabling immediate take-up by industry. This is via collaboration between 16 top universities from Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America, and 4 EU industries with expertise in precision experiments, micro-fabrication, theoretical modelling, numerical simulations, batteries and cooling systems design. Our collaboration will enable knowledge transfer, access to exclusive facilities (at MIT, Georgia Tech, York Toronto, TIFR Bangalore, Kyushu) and training of around 50 doctoral researchers in latest experimental, modelling, design and scale-up methods. Besides regular meetings, we will have annual workshops (Thessaloniki, London, Fukuoka and Atlanta) and training schools (Edinburgh, MIT, Warsaw, Bangalore and Pretoria). This will consolidate the EU’s position at the forefront of cutting-edge research in this crucial area and promote long-sustaining collaboration between academia and industry.

Thermal management enabling longevities in (electric) Energy Transformative Technologies

Klimaendringer påvirker oss alle, men ikke likt. Mennesker som allerede er marginaliserte, som lavinntektsgrupper, eldre og personer med helseproblemer, er mer sårbare for ekstreme værhendelser som hetebølger, stormer og flom. En viktig faktor som påvirker sårbarheten, er boligsituasjonen. Dårlige boforhold kan gjøre folk mer utsatt for helserisiko, særlig luftveis- og hjerte- og karsykdommer. ComDisp-prosjektet undersøker disse risikoene ved å utvikle en ny metode for å studere helseforskjeller knyttet til boligforhold. I stedet for å stole utelukkende på tradisjonelle modeller, fokuserer vi på spesifikke forhold i lokalmiljøene. Vi samarbeider direkte med lokalbefolkningen, helseorganisasjoner og beslutningstakere for å utvikle modeller som forutsier hvordan klimaendringer vil påvirke helsen under ulike boforhold. Ved å involvere lokalsamfunn i forskningsprosessen sikrer vi at løsningene vi utvikler, er praktiske og nyttige for dem som rammes hardest.

Forskningen vår foregår i fire land: USA, Vietnam, Tyrkia og Ecuador, men innsikten vi får, vil være relevant i en bredere global kontekst. På hvert sted samarbeider vi med lokale myndigheter, bolig- og helseorganisasjoner og klimaaktivister for å sikre at arbeidet får en reell innvirkning. Prosjektet bygger på en vellykket pilotstudie i Jacksonville, USA, hvor vi testet en modell for faktorer som påvirker boforholdene i et lokalmiljø. Nå skal metoden tilpasses og utvides til flere regioner, slik at vi kan sammenligne hvordan boligforhold og klimaendringer samspiller i ulike miljøer.

Gjennom dette prosjektet bidrar vi ikke bare til ny kunnskap, men også til at lokalsamfunn lærer av hverandre. ComDisp-prosjektet inkluderer partnere fra universiteter, lokale myndigheter og samfunnsorganisasjoner over hele verden. Ved å dele erfaringer og løsninger på tvers av landegrenser ønsker vi å bidra til sterkere, sunnere og mer motstandsdyktige bomiljøer for alle.

Around the world, climate change impacts fall disproportionately on those already marginalized in society. Natural hazards are being modified by climate change (e.g. extreme heat, storms, flooding) and result in adverse impacts on human health, ecosystems and infrastructure. The homes that people inhabit contribute to their risk. Poor housing conditions combine with environmental phenomena to create chronic conditions of public health risk, manifesting as health disparities in respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. The ComDisp consortium will undertake community-centered research that develops a collaborative, iterative process for grassroots modeling of health disparities with predictive capability across climate change scenarios. It responds to health disparities related to housing conditions in the USA, Vietnam, Turkey and Ecuador - with broad relevance in every global society - where living environments are shaped by historical and contemporary injustices. The project users are populations who live in housing situations with high risk of climate change impacts, especially elderly, children, low-income communities, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. In each location, we will leverage existing partnerships with non-academic stakeholders to include local governments (land use, housing, public health), community health & housing organizations, and climate change action advocates. Although our project will undertake research in 4 countries, the case studies are strongly connected by a focus on how housing conditions are affected by climate change and impact on the health of inhabitants. Pilot research in Jacksonville, USA, has developed an initial process for community-centered modeling, to be adapted in each location. Consortium members will share our range of skills, resources and knowledge, and PhD students supported by the project will gain experience across the network while affected communities will learn from each other and grow together.
